Changing consumer shopping trends and the increasing popularity of private-label goods in ALDI stores have led to Coles and Woolworths improving their private-label product ranges.

Private-label products have grown strongly as a share of industry revenue over the past five years, now accounting for approximately one-quarter of all supermarket sales. In Australia the industry is moving more towards its European counterparts, with Private Label sales in the United Kingdom accounting for approximately 40% of total grocery sales.

Private-label goods are now offered across all product segments, including basic household goods and high-end and organic product ranges.

Consumer sentiment has been largely negative over the past five years. The quality of private label products has improved over the period, which has made these products increasingly appealing to customers that are worried about financial matters, particularly low-income families.
